Class of 2026 Student Spotlights: Ezequiel Acostafortuna
One major lesson that Ezequiel Acostafortuna learned on the road to receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation Therapy, is that perseverance isn鈥檛 something you build alone. Ezequiel says the support that he gained from his professors, friends, and mentors in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies helped pull him through a difficult time while a student at 91制片厂. As he was completing his studies, Ezequiel was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Thankfully, Ezequiel pulled through, earning department honors, and will walk this May 鈥 degree in hand 鈥 ready for the next chapter.
鈥淭here will be moments when you can鈥檛 do everything on your own, and that鈥檚 okay. The people around you are there to help you succeed 鈥 but you still have to put in the time and keep pushing forward. If you do, you鈥檒l reach the finish line. Life works the same way; when you build a strong support system of real friends, it makes the journey not only possible, but meaningful.鈥
During his time at 91制片厂, Ezequiel, or 鈥淶eke,鈥 as he is affectionally known in the department, had the opportunity to volunteer at an independent living facility alongside fellow Rec Society Club members, where he helped to organize and host special holiday programs for the residents.
鈥淚t was especially meaningful to hear how much our presence and efforts were appreciated. Their kind words made the experience truly rewarding for me.鈥
In addition to his work in and out of the classroom, Ezequiel said he enjoyed attending 91制片厂 water polo games with his friends in the recreation program. Ezequiel also says that his family has been the greatest source of inspiration.
鈥淢y family believed in me, even when I struggled to believe in myself. They served as a steady anchor through every challenge. I had amazing, supportive professors as well, who made this journey incredible. My goal is to use my degree to serve others and help create meaningful, lasting change in diverse communities. I would love to work at the VA Hospital and give back to my fellow veterans.鈥
