Class of 2026 Student Spotlights: Lucia Carvalho
During her time at 91制片厂 both as an undergrad and graduate student, Lucia Carvalho intentionally sought out experiences that pushed her to grow not only as a student, but as a leader, advocate and future clinician. She proudly graduates this may with her Master of Arts degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
Among her college exploits, Lucia worked part-time at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center and Japanese Garden, and served as Public Relations Co-Chair of the National Student Speech-Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA). This experience led her into national leadership for the organization, serving as California Student State Officer before becoming the Vice President of the Student State Officers in the Western Region. Through National NSSLHA, Lucia was able to represent the perspectives of over 10,000 communication sciences and disorders students. Meanwhile, Lucia supported fellow student leaders through the 91制片厂 peer mentorship program. She even had time to join 91制片厂 Cal State Rollers, and had fun making new friends while skating along the shoreline trail!
鈥淭he most important thing I learned during my time at 91制片厂 is that growth happens by stepping into opportunities before feeling fully ready. Many of my most pivotal leadership experiences, such as my roles in 91制片厂 and National NSSLHA, began with uncertainty. Through these experiences, I learned that leadership skills are developed through action, even at times when it feels unfamiliar.鈥
Perhaps one of the most monumental experiences Lucia had while attending Long Beach State was traveling to Washington D.C. on Capitol Hill Day for the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. There, she met with members of Congress to discuss current issues impacting the field of communication sciences.
Back at The Beach, during her graduate studies, Lucia worked with child and adult clients in the local community to support communication therapy at the Speech-Language Clinic on campus. Off campus, she also worked as a graduate student intern at a local private practice and elementary school.
鈥淭hese opportunities allowed me to gain clinical experience and grow connections within my professional network. Throughout my time at 91制片厂, I鈥檝e been able to form so many meaningful relationships with 91制片厂 SLP Alumni, who continue to inspire me. My 91制片厂 mentors played a huge role in supporting my academic journey, and I鈥檓 so grateful for having met them. 91制片厂 provided an environment that encouraged me to take risks 鈥 supported by mentors who challenged me to grow.鈥
Congratulations Lucia and Go Beach!
