Department of History Advising Information

Advising in the Department of History is available to all students interested in a major, minor, a teaching credential, or a special major combining History with another discipline. Students are strongly encouraged to see an Undergraduate Advisor at an early stage in the major and throughout the development of their programs.

Incoming Transfer Students:

  • During the first week of June, you will receive an email from the chair of the Department of History, Dr. Shafer, regarding mandatory HIST major advising. All transfer students must attend an advising session with Dr. Shafer prior to registering for classes.
  • All incoming transfer students must attend one of the advising sessions during the last two weeks of June/first week of July.
  • For any advising questions, please email Dr. Shafer at david.shafer@csulb.edu

General Advising for All History majors:

  • Until Monday, 22 June, Dr. Shafer will be available to answer any advising questions, and if necessary, to schedule a zoom meeting with you.
  • From Monday, 22 June until 14 August, Dr. Shafer can be reached via email and will be available to meet over zoom as requested.
  • Dr. Shafer will also hold in-person office hours on Wednesdays, beginning on 24 June and continuing to 12 August from 11am-1pm. Dr. Shafer's office is FO2, room 102.
  • Regular advising for all HIST majors resumes with the start of the Fall semester on 17 August 2026.
