Oliver Wang, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Sociology at 91��Ƭ�� and the author of “Legions of Boom: Filipino American Mobile DJ Crews of the San Francisco Bay Area” (Duke University Press, 2015) and “Cruising J-Town: Japanese American Car Culture in Los Angeles” (Angel City Press, 2025). Dr. Wang is a popular culture scholar, with expertise in popular music, food, sports, and car culture, among other topics. 

Outside of the academy, he has over 30 years' experience as an arts/culture writer and critic for outlets such as NPR's All Things Considered, the Los Angeles Review of Books, the Los Angeles Times, and KCET’s Artbound. He has co-hosted the podcasts Pop Rocket and Heat Rocks and is currently developing a new podcast on the songs of Asian America. In 2025, he curated the major exhibition, “Cruising J-Town: Behind the Wheel of the Nikkei Community,” for the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. 

Wang holds a doctorate and an M.A. in ethnic studies and a B.A. in sociology, all from the University of California, Berkeley.
